• Delete a payment from an invoice or bill using remove & redo or remove an overpayment.
You can't restore payment transactions deleted using remove & redo. If this is used in error, you'll need to recreate the payment.
How it works
- To delete a payment transaction, use the remove & redo feature in Xero. Xero deletes the payment transaction from the invoice or bill and deletes it from Xero.
- The bank statement line associated with the payment transaction remains in the bank account so you can reconcile it with another invoice or bill. The invoice or bill returns to awaiting payment status.
- If a payment is applied from a non-bank account you've enabled payments to, such as owners funds or drawings, delete the payment transaction in the same way.
- If the payment transaction is applied to the correct invoice or bill, but is reconciled with the wrong statement line, unreconcile the transaction instead.
- If an overpayment has been applied to the wrong invoice or bill, remove it, then re-apply it to the correct transaction, or apply a refund.
Delete a payment
Web
- In the Business menu, select Invoices or Bills to pay.
- Select the Paid or Awaiting Payment tab.
- Find and open your paid or partly paid invoice or bill.

Click the blue Payment link in your invoice or bill. If you're using new invoicing, click Less payment - [date].

Click Options, then select Remove & Redo.
You can also delete a payment transaction from the Account Transactions tab of a bank account.
iOs
From an invoice
- On the Dashboard, tap Sales.

Next to Invoices, tap See all.

Search for the invoice, then tap to open it.

Under Minus payments, tap the payment.

Tap Options.

Tap Delete Payment, then tap Delete to confirm. This moves the invoice back to an awaiting payment status.
It’s not possible to remove a payment from a bill on the Xero Accounting app for iOS. You need to log in to the web version of Xero to do this.
Android
From an invoice

On the Dashboard, tap Sales.

Next to Invoices, tap SEE ALL.

Search for the invoice, then tap to open it.

Under Minus payments, tap the payment.

Tap the menu icon (⋮), then tap Delete.
It’s not possible to remove a payment from a bill on the Xero Accounting app for Android. You need to log in to the web version of Xero to do this.
Remove an overpayment
If credit from an overpayment is applied to the wrong bill or invoice, remove it so you can re-apply it to the correct transaction or refund it. Overpayments that were fully allocated will move to an awaiting payment status.
- In the Business menu, select Invoices or Bills to pay.
- Select the Paid or Awaiting Payment tab.
- Find and open the invoice or bill the overpayment is allocated to.

Click Overpayment.
- Click the remove icon next to the amount credited to the invoice or bill.
- Click OK.
